Sitkans to Head to Polls Tuesday in City Election
By Sentinel Staff
Polls will be open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday for the municipal election in which Sitka voters will elect two members to the City and Borough Assembly and two to the Sitka School Board.
On the ballot for Assembly are Orion Hughes-Knowles, Bob Potrzuski and incumbent Matthew Hunter. Voters also may write in the name of John Welsh, who is running as an official write-in candidate.
Five candidates are running for School Board: Ed Gray, Kat Richards, Eric Van Cise, Cass Pook and Jennifer Robinson. Pook and Robinson are the incumbents.
In each of the races, the two candidates winning the highest number of votes will be elected.
With the renovation of Harrigan Centennial Hall under way, new polling locations have been established for Sitka’s two voting precincts.
Precinct 1 voters will cast ballots at Grace Harbor Church, at 1904 Halibut Point Road, across the highway from Sea Mart. Drivers can enter the church’s parking lot from either HPR or Cascade Creek Road.
Voters in Precinct 2 will cast their ballots at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, 605 Lincoln St., across from Crescent Harbor. Those driving to St. Gregory’s may park in either the front or back of the church. The voting booths are located downstairs in the church, which may be entered directly from Lincoln Street.
Early voting will take place through 5 p.m. today on the third floor of City Hall.
A voter who goes to the wrong polling place may cast a provisional ballot which will be counted with the absentee ballots at 3 p.m. Oct. 9.
Those with questions may call the city clerk’s office at 747-1811.
