Ron Ozawa
Ron Ozawa, a nearly lifelong Sitka, died April 22, at the age of 78.
A viewing will be held 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Prewitt Funeral Home, and a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, April 28, at Sitka National Cemetery.
Ron was born April 6, 1945, in Seattle, the son of Ivy Inez Cogo, a homemaker, and Paul Ozawa, a painter. When he was 2, the family moved back to Sitka, the parents’ hometown.
Ron was a loving father, son, brother, uncle, and friend, and lived an adventurous and fulfilling life.
He served in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Berlin, Germany, then began his career in construction in Chicago, then settled down in Sitka.
Ron was an avid fisherman, which he learned from his father. His skill made it possible for him to win the 1975 annual Sitka Salmon Derby, and be a dedicated deckhand, crew, and boss on his own boats until 2006, when he finally settled down and began his carving journey.
Along with the carving, painting, and talking about fishing with anyone he knew, Ron also enjoyed walking his dog, Lady Ozawa.
He was a member of the American Legion and the Loyal Order of the Moose.
Ron was a dedicated father to his two daughters, who kept him young by making sure he attended as many sports, concerts, and events as possible. This dedication was non-wavering and still strong well into his daughters’ adult lives.
Ron is survived by his daughters, Krista (Daniel) Perala and Valerie Ozawa, and his daughters’ brother Eric “the Boy” Alvarado; his brothers Robert Ozawa and Roy Ozawa; his sisters Rhea (Wade) Eisenhower and Rhonda (John) Reaney; and his grandson, Cody Perala.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivy Inez Cogo and Paul Ozawa; his brothers Richard Ozawa, Ray Ozawa and Reggie Ozawa; and sisters Renee (Joe) Telefoni, Roberta (Joe) Reeves, and Rita (Calvin) Stien.
Honorary pallbearers are Ray Howard, Roy Ozawa, Wade Eisenhower, Don Marvin and Todd White.
Pallbearers are Robert Ozawa, Daniel Perala, Woody Widmark, Eric Alvarado and Devin Jones.
Donations may be made to the Ron Ozawa Funeral Fund at Tongass FCU, or may contacting Krista Perala at (907) 738-7877, 2303 Halibut Point Road No. 35, Sitka.
