The state Department of Health and Social Services has posted the following update on the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Alaska as of 9:55 a.m. Friday.

New cases as of Thursday: 971

Total statewide – 122,678

Total (cumulative) deaths – 594

Total (cumulative) hospitalizations – 2,602

Sitka High students Susan L. Nelson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Nelson,  and Sharon L. Marler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Marler, have received letters of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test for their high performance, Principal James Broschat announced.
