LUTHERAN QUILTERS – Members of the Quilts for Comfort Group stand between pews draped with some of the 205 quilts they made, in the Sitka Lutheran Church Tuesday. The group made the quilts for five local non-profits and one in Anchorage. The remaining quilts are sent to Lutheran World Relief which  distributes them to places around the world in need, such as Ukraine, as part of Personal Care Kits. October 13, 2021, Police Blotter

Sitka Police Department logged the following calls as of 8 a.m. today.

October 12

At 3:25 a.m. police issued a verbal warning to a resident on Harbor Mountain Road about having a bear attractant.

At 7:57 a.m. a caller reported a van appeared to be having a mechanical issue on the O’Connell Bridge. The van was gone when officers arrived.

At 8:30 a.m. police were asked to check on the welfare of a man. Officers found he was in need of EMS.

At 8:33 a.m. residents said they were out of town and their dogsitter told them someone had taken the dog. Officers located the dog and it was returned home.

At 9:48 a.m. an iPhone was reported found on the sidewalk outside AT&T.

At 11:44 a.m. a 14-year-old was reported to have damaged walls and furniture at an apartment. The juvenile probation officer arranged to have the teen taken to Juneau.

At 11:46 a.m. a woman was reported blocking traffic on Oceanview Street. Police trespassed her from the area.

At 1:09 p.m. a driver was reported going the wrong way on Kaagwaantaan Street as a detour past a closed section of Katlian Street.

At 3:28 p.m. a man said he’d been assaulted the night before. He didn’t identify the attackers and declined to press charges.

At 4:52 p.m. a bear was reported at the Starrigavan campground, on the land side.

At 5:08 p.m. residents in the Lance Drive and Burkhart Street area complained of vehicles with loud mufflers.

At 6:43 p.m. a caller reported her dog was running at large, but a few minutes later called to say the dog was home.

At 7:11 a.m. an incident of drunkenness was reported at a downtown hotel.

At 9:41 a.m. a caller at the animal shelter said two bears were in the way of her leaving. Officers didn’t find the bears, and helped the woman get to her car.

At 11:47 p.m. a woman said a dog had attacked her dog during a walk in the 500 block of SMC. The animal control officer was notified.

October 13

At 12:02 a.m. a 12-year-old who wasn’t wearing a helmet was reported riding a motorcycle at a high rate of speed on Burkhart Drive and Lance Street. Police said when officers arrived, with their car lights on, the juvenile dropped the motorcycle and ran. Officers contacted parents, and will forward charges.

At 2:17 a.m. a bear was reported raiding a trash can in the 1500 block of Edgecumbe Drive.

At 6:26 a.m. a caller said the wind had blown open her front door, and she had a broken leg and couldn’t get to the door to shut it. Officers responded and closed the door.

 

Emergency Calls

Sitka Fire Department received four ambulance calls.
