Sitka’s COVID Case Rate Dips

Sitka added one positive COVID-19 case on Wednesday, bringing the weekly total to 12 and a case rate of 140.79.
It’s a substantial drop from the rate of last week, and the lowest weekly rate Sitka has experienced since July 4, when it was 117.33.
The rate is the number of cases in seven days, adjusted for a 100,000 population.
Sitka will remain on “high” COVID alert as long as the case rate is 100 and above (nine or more cases over the past seven days).
The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services says 6,209 people in Sitka are partially vaccinated (84.09 percent of the age 12 and older population) and 5,858 are fully vaccinated (79.32 percent).
The city Emergency Operations Center and other members of the Unified Command held a meeting on Wednesday, which included discussion of vaccination efforts. Harry Race’s next clinic for Pfizer, Johnson and Johnson, and Moderna vaccinations, as well as flu shots, is Friday, but no appointments are available.
A reservation for the Oct. 22 clinic and future clinics, which will offer flu shots also, can be made at sitkapharmacies.com.

Michael Stringer, environmental specialist for Sitka Tribe of Alaska and a founder of the community garden, takes the concept of Earth Week literally. This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
