Book Challenge
Slated for Adults
Teams are still needed for the Adult Book Challenge (Battle of the Books) to be held Feb. 19 at Centennial Hall.
It’s sponsored by the Sitka Public Library and Friends of the Library to help raise funds for the 100th Anniversary of the Sitka Public Library, in March 2023.
Six books are to be read. Each team donates $150 to the library to help off-set the costs of the anniversary event.
‘‘As a team of one to five, you will need to read the six books and be ready to answer a variety of questions taken from the books,’’ organizers said.
COVID-19 precaution rules will be in effect. For information contact Jeff Budd at 747 4821 or Jbudd3500@gmail.com.

Earring-Making
Series is Offered
An earring-making class with Jessica Towns (Alutiiq/Sugpiaq) will be held 2-2:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, via Zoom.
The Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum invites the public to attend this event as part of its Share Your Culture/Share Your Research Winter Public Program Series.
Participants can join Towns to make a pair of beaded earrings based on an ancestral pair from Ugashik in the Smithsonian Museum’s collection. The earrings from Ugashik may be seen at: https://alaska.si.edu/record.asp?id=151 and an example of a pair similar to what students will make is pictured to the left. The actual pair students make may be slightly simpler and colors will be selected by the makers.
The class is free; however, students will need to have the following materials to participate: 2x 4mm Closed jump rings; 2x earhooks; 1x hank of 11/0 Toho seed beads; 6x 10mm beads; 8x 6mm beads; 12x 4mm beads; No 11 Color Eyes Needles; and Nymo D Thread.
Four public programs remain, including artist talks, a storytelling event, an earring making class, and Chilkat weaving demonstrations. All will be available on Zoom and links to attend and more details are available at the Sheldon Jackson Museum, www.museums.alaska.gov, and the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum Facebook page. People may also call (907) 747-8981 for more information.

Michael Stringer, environmental specialist for Sitka Tribe of Alaska and a founder of the community garden, takes the concept of Earth Week literally. This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
