Sitka Feels Small Quake; No Damage, Tsunami

A small earthquake jolted Sitka before sunrise this morning, though no damage was reported and no tsunami occurred.
The 4.6 magnitude quake occurred at 5:51 a.m. about 49 miles northwest of Sitka, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported.
The center is operated by the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
Sitkans awake at the time felt only a mild jolt. Some residents said the brief shake toppled small objects on shelves.
“There was no damage reported and no calls came in,” Sitka Fire Department senior engineer Scott Foss told the Sentinel.
There is no tsunami risk from the quake, which happened at sea, NOAA said on its website tsunami.gov.
When a quake happens, Foss said, Sitkans should tune in to local radio stations or check for emergency broadcasts on marine VHF channel 16.
“If there is an actual tsunami all of that will happen pretty much at the same time, and we will activate our tsunami sirens here and broadcast a message for people to go to higher ground,” Foss said. Sitka’s designated tsunami evacuation points are at Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary and Sitka High schools.
A minor earthquake such as today’s serves as a reminder to check on emergency preparedness equipment, he added.
“It’s always a good time to remind people to check their go-bags and make sure that they’re ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice,” he said. “Any time something like this happens it’s always a good time to double check and make sure you’re prepared for the worst case scenario.”

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. Wiethuchter recently wrote a letter to “Mayor Sitka, Alaska” asking about the town since he was here during World War II. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
