LUTHERAN QUILTERS – Members of the Quilts for Comfort Group stand between pews draped with some of the 205 quilts they made, in the Sitka Lutheran Church Tuesday. The group made the quilts for five local non-profits and one in Anchorage. The remaining quilts are sent to Lutheran World Relief which  distributes them to places around the world in need, such as Ukraine, as part of Personal Care Kits. December 27, 2021, Police Blotter

Sitka Police Department logged the following calls as of 8 a.m. today.

December 23

A fender bender was reported at Sandy Beach at 1 p.m. One vehicle was towed but no injuries were reported.

Mailboxes were found open on Knutson Drive. The post office was advised.

A resident on Andrew P. Hope Drive said he’d taken his ill dog to the vet and learned it had been poisoned by antifreeze. The animal control officer was notified.

At 11:18 p.m. a caller said his car parked in the 300 block of Lincoln Street had been hit, with damage to the driver-side mirror.

December 24

At 1:33 a.m. a report of drunkenness came in from the area of Centennial Hall.

At 2 a.m. a 911 caller reported a person in an altered mental state was at Sealing Cove. Officers checked it out and made sure the person was safe.

At 12:33 p.m. a caller said a fishing boat appeared stuck between Big Gavanski and Little Gavanski islands off Halibut Point. The Coast Guard was called and said it had encountered the boat, which had floated free and was heading back to town.

At 3:29 p.m. an incident of drunkenness was reported in the 1300 block of SMC.

December 25

At 6:57 a.m. a caller reported a friend had fallen. Officers found the friend was OK, and advised the friend to call the caller.

At 10:48 a.m. a caller said a driver had run into his brick fence in the 700 block of Lincoln Street, causing damage and leaving behind parts of a car. Officers located the driver, and a case has been opened.

At 2:30 p.m. a caller reported seeing a driver with an open container. Police found the driver, but no open containers.

At 9:47 p.m. a man said his dog had gotten entangled in its choke collar. He was advised to take it to the fire hall. The animal control officer was notified.

December 26

At 2:05 a.m. a broken water line was reported on Wolff Drive, with water freezing on the street. Public Works was called.

At 3 a.m. a dog was reported left in a parked car for over two hours in the 300 block of Seward Street. The car was gone when officers arrived.

At 9:55 a.m. a caller said a man was walking in the middle of the road near the trooper academy. Officers talked to the man, who said he was in the street because of snowbanks blocking the sidewalk.

At 10:52 p.m. a car was reported parked after hours on the Kimsham ball field. The owner was advised to move the car.

December 27

At 2:12 a.m. a caller reported people who didn’t live there hanging out at the Sawmill Creek Apartments, and in a second call at 2:41 a.m. said people appeared to be looking into parked vehicles.

 

Emergency Calls

Sitka Fire Department received one ambulance call Thursday; four on Friday, four on Saturday and none on Sunday.

 

Sitka Police

Jorge Ruiz Rivera, 28, was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest early Sunday morning.
