Grab & Go Event
For Kids at Library
Sitka Public Library will offer a grab and go bag program in October with free crafts for preschoolers.
Bags will be ready on Oct. 8, 15, 22 and 29 and can be picked up anytime during the week.
The program is for children ages 3 to 5 years. Registration is required and space is limited. Call 747 4020 to register beginning Sept. 25. It will be the last grab and go program. In-person story time will resume Nov. 10.
Trick or Treaters
Scavenger Hunt
Slated at Library
Eleven trick or treaters are hiding at the library and youths of all ages are invited to find them to decode a secret message.
Correct answers go into a random drawing and the winner gets a prize. Starting Oct. 1, until Oct. 29, at Sitka Public Library.

Trick or Read
Program Listed
Sitka Babies and Books will host the annual Trick or Read free open house program 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at Sitka Public Library.
Children can wear their Halloween costumes to the event that includes literacy activities. The program is for babies, toddlers and preschoolers.

Dinner, Auction
For Youth Football
A fish fry and desert auction for Sitka Youth Football will be held 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, at the Elks Lodge.
Players have been selling raffle tickets for the past few weeks and the drawing will be held at the event. Tickets are on sale for $10 each and the winning ticket wins a Springfield XDM 10mm handgun. Tickets will be sold until the drawing is held.

The public is invited to join Sitka Tribe of Alaska’s social services department noon-2 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi for a shared meal and the viewing of Molly of Denali episode, ‘‘Grandpa’s Drum.’’
The program is being held to ‘‘honor and uphold survivors and intergenerational survivors of the Indian residential school system, and to commemorate those who didn’t return home,’’ organizers said.

Academic Lists
The University of Alaska Fairbanks has announced students named to the dean’s and chancellor’s lists for the fall 2021 and spring 2022 semesters. The lists recognize students’ outstanding academic achievements.
Those receiving a 3.9 grade point average or higher are placed on the chancellor’s list, while students receiving a grade point average of between 3.5 and 3.89 are named to the dean’s list.

VBS for Youths

‘Yom Teru’ah’ at
Calvary Chapel
Calvary Chapel Sitka on Sunday will celebrate “Yom Teru’ah,” the Festival of Trumpets, also known as Rosh Hashanah.
It begins Sunday and runs through Tuesday evening. This fifth of the 7 Old Testament feasts starts with a new moon. Attendees can learn about and celebrate the first of the fall feasts. A shared dish will conclude the teaching. Call Pastor Dug at 747-5454 with questions.

Sawmill Creek Rd.
Project Updated:
The Sawmill Creek Road Resurfacing and Pedestrian Improvements project website has been updated with the following information for this week:
Weather permitting, Secon will begin paving Sawmill Creek Road from the Lake Street roundabout to Jeff Davis Street.
Access to driveways along the project corridor will be restricted during operations. Wait time for asphalt to cool is three hours.
As a reminder for displaced residents, designated parking 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, through Saturday, Oct. 1, will be in the city lot off of Baranof Street.
The following bus stops have been relocated on Sawmill Creek Road:
The Biorka Street bus stop has been relocated to the entrance of the recycling center on Sawmill Creek Road (about 80 feet past the end-of-project location around Jeff Davis Street).
The Baranof Street bus stop has been relocated to the corner of Degroff Street and Baranof Street.
The school year has started so the city lot on Baranof Street is shared with school staff and residents.
