BEST MEDICINE – Virgil Scott, left, leads a march around the SEARHC cafeteria Wednesday afternoon during the weekly meeting of a Parkinson’s support group. Speech therapist Liz Cooley, who helps facilitate the meetings, said that Parkinson’s medications treat only the symptoms, while physical therapy, including big exercises and being loud, has been effective in slowing the progression of the disease. The group formed in June and meets on Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. Cooley says anyone suffering from Parkinson’s is invited to the free gatherings and is encouraged to bring friends, family and caregivers.  SEARHC speech, physical and occupational therapists have been leading exercises.
