Bear Kills, Eats Dog In Sitka Neighborhood

A brown bear killed and partially ate a family’s dog near their home on Rudolph Walton Circle Friday afternoon, police said today.
The owners of the 11-year-old Karelian bear dog called police at 3:35 p.m. Friday, reporting the attack. The dog’s partially consumed remains were found 50 to 75 yards into the woods, off Rudolph Walton, Fish and Game Wildlife Biologist Steve Bethune said. Troopers found a male bear in the same area, and killed it.
Bethune said he wasn’t present when the decision was made to kill the bear, but said, “(killing a pet) is a standard line we don’t allow bears to cross.”
The bear had been seen in the area earlier in the day, troopers said. Residents at 108 Rudolph Walton Circle called for help after their medium size dog apparently chased the bear into the woods and didn’t return, Bethune said.
In a news release the troopers said:
“No evidence of an attractant was observed at the home; however, based on previous reports from the area, garbage was likely a factor in attracting the bear to the neighborhood.”
“The Indian River subdivision is an area we have regular calls from,” Bethune commented.
Although it’s the second time a bear has been killed in the Sitka area in as many months, Bethune said it’s been a comparatively quiet summer for bear activity in Sitka.
“It’s been lower than average,” he said.
Bethune estimated the male bear in this incident was around four years old, and described him as “skinny, not a lot of fat.”
