BLUE RIBBON COOL – Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary School students wear blue sunglasses and bead necklaces given to them as part of the Blue Ribbon celebration at the school today. In September the school was named one of three schools in Alaska and 353 across the nation to win the U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon Schools. The recognition as Exemplary High-Performing Schools was based on their overall academic performance as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

C.G. Rescues Man
On Fishing Boat
A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter crew picked up a man off a fishing vessel Tuesday after he suffered a seizure and later jumped overboard, off Yakobi Island, the Coast Guard said.
The request for assistance came in on VHF Channel 16 from the F/V Madeline Ruby, around 4:30 p.m., reporting a 42-year-old crew member was suffering from a seizure. Juneau Command Center lost communications while trying to gather information.
The helicopter went to the scene but the patient told the Coast Guard he didn’t need help, and the helicopter left. But once the helicopter was back in Sitka, the crew was told the man was having another seizure and needed help. While the helicopter was en route, the man became delirious and jumped overboard; the skipper retrieved him. The helicopter landed on a nearby beach.
A good Samaritan vessel helped in delivering the rescue swimmer and the flight surgeon to help the man. He was hoisted in a litter and flown to Sitka, where he was given further medical care.
