Barton Sollars, Sr.

Barton Austin Sollars Sr., a former Sitka fisherman, died Feb. 11 at the family’s winter home in Yuma, Ariz., at age 83.
He passed away five weeks after being diagnosed with stage 4 renal cell cancer.
Barton was born in Klamath Falls Ore., on Nov. 9, 1929. When he was 13, he and his father, Albert Sollars, came to Sitka, where they fished on the boat Higill. He was a 1947 Sitka High School graduate.
He married Carol Ann Johanessen in 1950, and they raised four children in Sitka: Barton Sollars Jr., Lorna Sollars, Thomas Sollars and Lyman Sollars.
The family spent many summers fishing the Bertha R around Southeast Alaska. In the early 1970s he established Sollars Court.
When his son Lyman died in 1986,  the Sollarses retired from fishing and worked on Lyman’s share of the farm at Point Agassiz, near Petersburg.
Barton loved fishing, hunting and gathering from the land with his family and friends. He had a knack for fixing things and was always there to help a friend. his family said. “He will be sorely missed.”
He was preceded in death by his wife Carol Ann Sollars, sons Thomas Sollars and Lyman Sollars, and greatgrandson Jacob Chappell.
Barton is survived by his son Barton Sollars Jr., daughter Lorna Chappell, grandchildren Barton J.
